The objectives of this project are to make a complete and detailed chemical characterization
of mandarin varieties from Neretva valley to determine whether there is a chemotaxonomic
pattern specific to the microclimatic mandarin cultivation conditions in the Neretva valley;
prepare, apply and test ecofriendly edible coatings with extracts of grape marc, apple marc
and mandarine peel; metabolite characterization by chromatographic methods and total
transcriptome sequencing using the latest deep-seq technologies (RNA-Seq), assessment of
molecular mechanism in mandarine fruit during the application of edible coatings and various
treatments which will contribute to understanding the response and selecting the most
suitable postharvest treatments.
The main objective of this project is to investigate the effect of edible coatings with added
extract of grape pomace, apple pomace and mandarin peel (fruit biowaste) rich in chemical
compounds that have antimicrobial, antimycotic and antioxidant effects in postharvest
treatments to keep mandarin in the market for as long as possible and preserves its fruit
quality. Such formulations are inexpensive and safe for human health, and at the same time,
the use of mandarin peels, which is rich in bioactive compounds, is increasing.
Comprehensive monitoring of individual secondary metabolites (aromas, polyphenolic
compounds, carotenoids, organic acids, amines, volatile compounds) before and after
postharvest treatment, and genome-wide gene function monitoring, will be able to determine
the exact mechanism of action of edible coatings, which would determine the development of
new improved and more effective formulations. At the same time, the purpose of this project
is to make a complete and detailed chemical characterization of mandarin varieties from
Neretva valley in order to determine whether there is a chemotaxonomic pattern specific to
the agroclimatic conditions of mandarin cultivation in the Neretva River Delta.
